About
Odessa Whitlock
Odessa Whitlock is a vibrant, whimsical Queer Antiguan American artist based in North New Jersey, whose creative journey is a blend of curiosity, resourcefulness, and deep connection to memory and identity. Currently a senior at Montclair State University, Odessa has recently expanded their artistic practice from painting to fiber arts, a medium they’ve embraced over the past year.
Trained in the classical techniques of painting, Odessa found themselves drawn to the tactile and evocative nature of fabric. This exploration into fiber arts was born out of necessity and ingenuity. Faced with the financial challenges of being an artist, Odessa began repurposing their own clothing and braiding hair, discovering this could serve as a more affordable alternative to traditional paint. For Odessa, fabric and braiding hair are more than just materials; they are vessels of memory, connecting generations and preserving the essence of people who may no longer be in their lives.
A few places Odessa has shown their pieces during 2024 are galleries in New York: Canada Gallery, REM Studios, Brosha Studios, and TheBlanc. As well as in New Jersey, at Papermill Playhouse, The Space Montclair and Studio Esq.
